Close to the village of Ballintoy, Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge is a spectacular 20m expanse between the mainland and the small island of Carrickarede some 30m above the sea. It was built to allow salmon fishermen to access the coastline from the island but now draws thousands of tourists who flock there for outstanding views and to visit just one of the filming locations for HBO's TV series 'Game of Thrones'. Nearby Larrybane quarry can also be accessed from the rope bridge car park.

Looking south towards the Gobbins from nearby Portmuck, this scene clearly demonstrates the rugged beauty of the coastline around Islandmagee. The area has recently been revived as a major tourist destination, with the opening of the Gobbin’s Centre and Cliff Walk.

While the true purpose of this ancient monument is now lost in time, it was long associated with fertility, betrothal and marriage. If nothing else, it is a beautiful scene located outside the village of Doagh, just off the road to Ballymena.

The East Maiden lighthouse sits on a rocky outcrop just off the coast near Larne. Although the lighthouse is visible from the Charles Lanyon-designed Antrim Coast Road, here it is viewed from a boat. These islands (also known as the Hulin Rocks) have become a undisturbed haven for seals and nesting seabirds.

Carnlough is a seaside town with a busy harbour. The family-run Londonderry Arms Hotel is an excellent base for a holiday or somewhere to relax with a good meal after a day’s exploring. Remnants of the town’s industrial past are still be seen. A walk (starting at the harbour footbridge) takes you through an abandoned quarry and onward to the beautiful Cranny Falls. Don’t miss Alex McKillop’s award winning ice-creams.

Limestone topped with basalt gives a distinctive look to this headland. Caves in the limestone were, until recently, a sheltering spot for the wild goats that still roam the area. The musky smell in the caves is a tell-tale sign of these elusive animals. Sturdy safety netting to stop rockfall now excludes explorers and goats alike.

As you approach Waterfoot, you will see the footings of a limestone bridge and the remains of an old pier; these are just just some of the vestiges of the dismantled mine railway, which was used to transport iron ore from the mines on the local hillside to the coast for shipping. The nearby Glenariff Forest Park has three spectacular waterfalls and offers numerous opportunities for scenic walks.

This is the view from the bridge over the River Dun as it flows into the sea. The walkway in front of the apartments brings you to a set of impressive “pudding stone” caves, one of which is the drive-through entrance to Cave House. On the other side of the village is the Torr Road; this spectacular coastal route to Ballycastle may not be suitable for learner drivers.

The ferry to Rathlin Island brings you in at Church Bay, where your walks (or bike rides ) begin. My favourite time of the year to visit Rathlin is May when the wild flowers are an unbelievable riot of colour. Going on an early morning sailing gives you ample time for a family adventure any time of the year.

Now over 200 years old, this beautiful bridge over the river Lackagh is a favoured spot for anglers and artists. It is on the road between Creeslough and Doe Castle.

The North Antrim Coast has something to marvel at round every headland. Sculpted basalt cliff faces give way to bright limestone or sandstone caves. The “pudding stone” at Cushendun and the basalt pillars at the Giant’s Causeway are among the spectacular geological formations along this remarkable coast. If you know where to look, a good range of fossils or rarer minerals can also be found. Stone Age axe heads honed from blue porcellanite quarried at Tievebulliagh Hill, near Cushendall, have been found across the British Isles and even further afield in Europe.

This small white Church stands out like a beacon on the north Antrim coast. A local lady told me it was once topped with a tall wooden spire. A storm claimed the spire one winter night and it has never been replaced ….. I like it just the way it is.

Portallintrae is a small holiday town close to Portrush and Whiterocks Beach. The picturesque harbour and tourist attractions get very busy during the summer. A little hidden gem.

Between Antrim town and Templepatrick lie the hill and church at Donegore. Among the famous buried here is the poet, Sir Samuel Ferguson. Another famous poet before him, James Orr wrote a poem about Donegore as did my great grandfather, Alex McGladdary … alas, not so famous. Going back even further there have been churches on this site since the 14th century. Furthermore, archaeologists have discovered remains and earthworks that far predate all of this.

Dundrum is a small town at the foot of the Mournes, just north of Newcastle. A castle, interesting old churches, good restaurants and coastal walks are among its highlights. The backdrop of the mountains makes it an ideal subject for artists and photographers alike.

Built in 1787 Foley’s Bridge in Tollymore Forest Park is one of 16 bridges that span the Shimna river as it flows through the Mourne Mountains to the sea at Newcastle. The forest at Tollymore offers a wide choice of walking and mountain bike trails to suit each visitor’s level of fitness. Open all year round.

Whitehead is a small town between Carrickfergus and Larne. Close to the famous Gobbins Cliff Path and the Blackhead lighthouse; it’s a great location for a day trip or a short break. The Old Bank House shop and restaurant near the railway station is a good place to start your adventure. It stocks a wide range of local art and craft goods; it also serves excellent coffee. The brightly painted Victorian houses along the promenade are cheerful to look at, even on the dullest of days.

Just recently restored, this path between Whitehead and Blackhead is a lovely place for a walk. If you’re fit enough to climb a “few” steps, then the loop round the lighthouse is well worth the effort. If you’re brave enough to do the walk at night …… I’ll not spoil the surprises. Be careful!

Scawt Hill, near Cairncastle is a volcanic plug with some rare mineral deposits. A public carpark at the start of an enjoyable walk gives access to this unspoiled rocky gem. The views of the Antrim coast will make the climb well worthwhile.
